The program seeks to provide focused approaches to gene mining by zooming in on essential competitive and mutualistic microbial interactions and by developing methods to target, express and screen for novel antimicrobial and antioxidant activities, which are expressed during, and as a result of, these interactions. The main ecological targets of this study are fungal-bacterial interactions during the decay of wood and nutrient-competitive interactions between soil bacteria.
