70 years of ecology: overview of events

On 26 June 2024, it is exactly 70 years since the founding of the IOO, the predecessor of the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW). Below is a growing overview of activities in the lustrum year.

What is the importance of ecology, and how can (70 years of) ecological knowledge help us as the key to the future?

Everyone is welcome to learn about ecology, or to delve further into it. Find all kinds of opportunities below:

• August 2024 - the importance of water quality. Together with the Dutch Research Agenda, we boosted the biodiversity of Lake Lowlands. Read more about Lowlands Science 2024 (link in Dutch).
• 20 September until 8 October - 10th edition of the Soil Animal Days. Thousands of people helped looking for life under our feet! The theme for this special year of the national citizen science project was: A ten for the soil! Everyone can contribute. More at www.bodemdierendagen.nl.
• Winter/spring 2025 - Citizen science events. Examples of citizen science are plenty to find at NIOO.
  On 3 December the first Citizen Science Cafe on soil was a success.
  On 11 March the next edition will be on Passion in the nestbox!
• March 2025 - 70 years of great tit research. What has it taught us all? From the effects of acid rain to ecological relationship problems caused by climate change.
• Starting in spring - you're welcome every month at the NIOO for a guided tour of the unique, sustainable building and research sites. Groups have always been able to request a guided tour. In addition, in the anniversary year there will be tours that anyone can sign up for individually. Want to know more in advance? Send an e-mail to communicatie@nioo.knaw.nl.
• June 2025 - 40 years of soil ecology! On 13 June, international soil expert Wim van der Putten will also give his farewell speech.
• 26 June 2025 - NIOO reunion!
